I contacted Scott's CS for clarification of seed mix and was told: The percentage, by law, is listed by weight. The types and breakdowns of seeds can change throughout the year due to availability. Bluegrass is a very small, fine, light seed. Tall fescue is a much larger seed by comparison. (This means that the seed count is not represented by the percentage. As an example, a mix of 44% tall fescue and 6% bluegrass provides approx. a 50:50 mix.)

Zoysia is normally vegetatatively propagated, a fairly expensive method involving the use of plugs and plantings of grass sod or sprigs. Because of the cost and labor involved in plugging, for 60 years, they have been trying to develop a seeded zoysia that is as good as the plugged varieties (eg,, Z-52). Success has not arrived yet. Zoysia seed is extremely moisture constrained, and in the unlikely event you can get it to germinate, it is genetically unstable, producing a thick bladed, non-uniform turf. This product comes with mulch, which attempts to address the moisture issue. In that regard, it gives you a much better shot at establishing a lawn than with seed alone. But you still face the limitations of seeded zoysia as a turf grass. BTW, I do not recommend zoysia north of the Mason-Dixon line, because it will be brown too much of the year.

From my experience using this product, I can say that it did the work for me. It didn't burn my lawn because I followed the spraying instructions on the bag. It helped my lawn during a very rough winter...the only negative I would say is that the weed control doesn't seem to work well at all. It might help a little, but the weeds will continue to grow, no doubt about that. If you are interested in keeping your lawn green and healthy, you might want to go for the WinterGuard with no Weed Control, and then use something more effective against the weeds; it will also save you a lot of money. Overall, it is a good product, but not great. Does its job, nothing special about it; that is why I rated it 4 stars.

I have been using this stuff from Scotts for about two years and it does kill the moss for about a couple of months. It seems to turn dark, the indication it is activated, after about a day of rain or watering. I have found that it needs three applicatiions per yer; once at the end of winter, middle of summer and finally at the beginning of winter.

There is nothing to do about moss except kill it when it shows up. The conditions of little/no sunlight and moisture will always attract the moss, so there will always be a need for this stuff.

I have experimented with different applicators, some I fashioned myself, but the best way is to just sling with your hand. You don't have to stand there and patiently let it dribble down. If you have a strip of grass just stand at one end and sling a hand full until it covers the ground and grass. It really does go down on the ground fairly evenly this way.

One other thing I have noticed is that if any moisture gets into the bag, hard clumps will form. Some of these can be just pulverized with your hand but others will need a mallet or hammer to bust them up.

You cannot go wrong with this brand.
