I ordered the 10x12 premium shed in August 2013 and built it in the late summer Texas heat. It is a lot of work to put up for one older person and took me over a month of paced assembly. But once finished it is an absolutely fantastic looking shed. Here are a few tips I learned along the way that will make the work go smoother for you.1. Plan on buying more 2x4s as some that come with the kit are of questionable quality. Overall the lumber is of good quality, however.
2. Consider getting some 3/4 inch plywood to replace the 7/16 inch that is included. Also, a few more 2x4s allow for a 12 inch center floor instead of an 18 inch center floor. I opted for pressure treated lumber to replace the regular flooring and floor frame lumber that was included.
3. Consider using a longer single piece for the ridge pole which will make the roof framing go a little easier and add strength. Just make sure you get a straight piece of lumber to avoid having to twist it into shape as you install the rafters.
4. Consider if you want the windows to start at the 11th row of siding as in the plans or the 10th which will make them look a little more natural from the outside. Inside the 11th row seems better.
5. The instructions are poorly written, contain contradictions and omit a few key facts like the 48 inch portion of the side wall frame that must be built on each side. I've pointed this out to the manufacturer but didn't see any change in the plans. They do respond quickly to emails if you have questions about assembly, however.
6. I suggest having a power miter saw and a circular saw handy to make some necessary cuts and/or if you plan to modify any of the instructions. A nail gun or palm nailer will save your arm as there are a lot of nails to set. The lumber cuts in the kit are pretty much right on even if the instructions have the them wrong or in conflict. Study the instructions before beginning.
7. The plans call for leaving a space between the roof sheathing and the top of the frame on both sides. It seems birds and bugs have an open invitation to enter your shed unless you close this opening. I opted to use 1x6 lumber to fill this gap and installed a couple of screened vents at each end of the 1x6s. A hand held jig saw comes in handy to make notches in the 1x6s for the rafters and the vents.
8. I suggest using a sprayer to lay down a coat of TWP 101 Cedartone stain to keep the cedar exterior looking fantastic.
