I have been scything about 7-10 acres of hay every year. By September, the goldenrod comes in and other woody species just seem to appear. Certain areas remain uncut because it is too much for my scythe. I've used a European style scythe up until now. I purchased this American style scythe and a snath just to try it out. American scythes to my knowledge have only received scathing reviews and I wanted to see for myself why that is. So far, I can say the American version cuts fine and just chuckles at woody growth that the European blade would complain vigorously about. It takes a different technique in scything and sharpening it is different as well. But both techniques are quickly learned. It is a hardy tool, robust and heavy. It feels as if it will stand up to years of abuse and certainly does not possess the delicacy of its European counterpart. In straight grass meadows, I can probably cut faster with the European scythe, with less effort, and in a more meditative state of mind, but in mixed meadows, where woody stems are more than occasional, the American scythe shines. Here it out maneuvers, out mows, and survives where the other would run and hide or get dinged up so bad mowing would be over for the day (or longer). It's bad reputation , as I can tell so far, is undeserved. I'll know more and have a better comparison come October when haying season is over for me. The other issue is I have not been able to find an adjustable snath for the European scythe whereas it is the most common type of snath for the American style scythe. Don't misunderstand me, I love my European style scythe and it will do the bulk of my haying for me. But when the going gets a bit rough, I'll be turning to the American scythe to get the job done.

First off,for $9.90,I didn't expect much.
And sure enough,"not much" is what I got.
It arrived today,in a package big enough for a deer rifle; the side of the box was bashed in.
The Cane Knife wasn't damaged; just an absolute piece of Chinese crap.
But when I had checked Seymour Manufacturing's website before ordering,it plainly stated this was 'made in the USA.'
Donna in Customer Service @ Seymour said:"No,they've been made in China for quite awhile now....No,we just haven't gotten around to changing our website to reflect that."
Putting aside the fact that this POS is helping support the Chinese Red Army,it's also quite a POS.
Handle fit is abysmal;three rivets,which are off-centered,and the absolute worst job I've ever seen when it comes to grinding a bevel on the blade!
Unfair to call that a bevel;I've seen sharper edges on car bumpers.
I'm disappointed that Amazon is selling this POS,and I'm upset that Seymour did nothing to let people know they are putting their name on this absolute POS!
Two other bummers here: my Dad owned one,20+ years ago,when they were still made by an American outfit up in Indiana...it was a tool!
Wish I could find it.Had 5 rivets in a fitted hickory handle; was easy to get shaving-sharp...even the curlicue 'hook' on top was sharp.
Other bummer is: would cost at least $6-$7 to send it back.
So I'll pitch it in the dumpster.

this is a very poorly made machete. its thick, feels as if it will fall apart at any moment, cant hold an edge, and it bends like mild steel. the handles are very cheesy. one little whack and the blade bends like crazy. Theyre also about as dull as a butter knife. these are made in china. I have definitely seen better made machetes. I dont think i will ever buy from seymour again. I would recommend tramontina for a machete. Ive had one of theirs for almost 8 years now and its been the best machete ive ever had.

This snath appears and feels very durable, and I'm confident it will hold up to anything short of being run over by a truck. I put the blade end in a vise and tried to bend it to adjust the blade angle a bit, but it wouldn't move with most of my 250lb bodyweight applied to the end of the handle. I ended up bending the blade tang to adjust the angle instead.

The blade mounting area and bolt are steel, and the design transfers forces into the aluminum handle without fatigue or stress-concentration problems. There are three holes for the tang end to allow some variety in blade mounting angle.

Contrary to a couple of the negative reviews, the handles ARE adjustable. The nut and threaded rod on the end of each handle are ground flush with the wood, and won't allow the nut to be turned independently, but the entire handle can be turned to loosten the nut. They were installed very tightly and without grease on mine, and I had to use a pair of channel locks to get them started. At first I tried to turn the handles counterclockwise to loosten, and then noted after some really hard effort that the flush-ground nut was offset in the tighter direction from the end of the rod... THE HANDLES ARE INSTALLED WITH REVERSE THREADS. Not sure why it is built this way, but after I figured it out, it was an easy process to loosten the handles (clockwise), adjust the snath to fit me, and tighten the handles (counterclockwise).

I used the Seymour 2B-42W24 Weed Scythe Blade with this snath. It seems like this snath/blade combination would best fit someone between 5'-6" and 6'-0" in height. Wedges could be used to adjust the blade angle for someone shorter, but I am 6'-5" tall and had to bend the blade's tang to get the angles to work properly. After I got it adjusted to fit properly and had a couple of hours of practice under my belt, I was thrilled with the way this tool performed.
