We bought 10 of these 36-inch Windsor planters made by Novelty Mfg. a few years ago. Yes, they were expensive, but we figured they'd be the last we'd ever need to buy and they looked good and would take care of themselves. They were described as never being subject to chipping, cracking or peeling. Resisting snow and ice. Well they don't. If you live in an area that has normal freezing temperatures in Winter, the self-watering reservoirs will completely crack open to the point where the self-watering feature is completely made useless. Yes, we did drill holes in the center bottom rib as recommended by the mfg. for outdoor use. However, drilling holes in the bottom just prevents the planters from becoming water logged during high periods of rain. They are well made and still look good except none of them hold water and they perpetually leak and stain our patio with brown stains whenever they are watered or whenever it rains. Remember, they are great for indoor use, we have two that we bring indoors during the Winter that are still OK. However, the bottoms if filled with water(there is no way to remove the water)will crack open if left outside and exposed to freezing temperatures. You won't see the cracks unless you tilt the planter over, but you will know they are there from the constant leaking and staining.
